Wireless LAN at Dutch Hospital Supports Mobile Electrocardiograms and Internet Access for Patients; Walcheren Hospital Chooses Trapeze and System Integrator Vosko for Technology and Support Capabilities.

PLEASANTON, Calif. -- Trapeze Networks(TM), manufacturer of the award-winning wireless LAN (WLAN See wireless LAN.

) Mobility System(TM), today announced that Walcheren Hospital in Vlissingen, the Netherlands, recently deployed an enterprise-grade Trapeze WLAN throughout its cardiology and pediatrics wards.

With 350 beds and 1,300 employees, Walcheren Hospital serves the cities of Vlissingen and Middelburg as well as surrounding rural regions of the Zeeland province.

In the Walcheren cardiology ward, the Trapeze WLAN enables physicians to capture digital electrocardiogram electrocardiogram /elec·tro·car·dio·gram/ (-kahr´de-o-gram?) a graphic tracing of the variations in electrical potential caused by the excitation of the heart muscle and detected at the body surface.  (ECG ECG electrocardiogram.

In the pediatrics ward, young patients are able to use laptops donated by the local Rotary Club to access the Internet, e-mail, online education media and entertainment resources via the WLAN. The idea is to provide all the comforts of home for young patients in the pediatrics ward.

) staff at Walcheren Hospital, wireless access offered substantial benefits over a wired network. Flexibility, simpler management, strong security and lower operating costs were cited as advantages.

"We chose Trapeze Networks because it was the only company that could deliver what it promised," said Tonnie de Looff, senior ICT manager at Walcheren Hospital. "Trapeze had the specific WLAN product features we wanted and its partner, Vosko, provided the systems integration and implementation support we required."

"We investigated and evaluated equipment from three WLAN manufacturers," said Mark van Strien, ICT manager at Walcheren Hospital. He noted that other WLAN manufacturers under consideration were unable to get their Wi-Fi gear up and running, while the Trapeze WLAN ran continuously from day one without issue.

Walcheren Hospital initially deployed 15 Trapeze Mobility Point(TM) MP-372(TM) access points, two Trapeze Mobility Exchange(TM) MX-400(TM) switches and the Trapeze MXR-2(TM) switch.

For centralized planning, configuration, management, monitoring and performance optimization, the hospital uses the Trapeze RingMaster(TM) WLAN lifecycle management tool suite. The ICT staff is already planning to extend the Trapeze WLAN throughout the remainder of the hospital.

"With RingMaster, we can expand and extend our WLAN coverage step-by-step," said de Looff. "We intend to provide wireless communication tools for the nursing staff and physicians, wireless prescription requests to our in-house pharmacy, location-independent ICU ICU intensive care unit.
