Winter Storm Warnings In Effect for Central Ohio Valley



COLUMBUS, Ohio Columbus is the capital and the largest city of the American state of Ohio. Named for explorer Christopher Columbus, the city was founded in 1812 at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, and assumed the functions of state capital in 1816.  - Central Ohioans should expect snow showers and cold temperatures Wednesday.

Storm Team 4 Meteorologist Bob Nunnally is calling for snow showers, breezy winds, 2 to 4 inches of snow and a high of 23 degrees today.

A Winter Storm Warning is an announcement made by the National Weather Service of the United States which means a winter storm is occurring or is about to occur in
 is in effect for Champaign, Clark, Delaware, Fairfield, Fayette, Franklin, Greene, Hardin, Licking, Logan, Madison, Pickaway and Union counties until midnight Thursday.

The rest of the counties in Central Ohio are under winter weather advisories.

1:15 P.M. UPDATE:  Storm Team 4‘s Jym Ganahl said six more hours of light snowfall is expected. Storm Team 4‘s Ben Gelber said that when the storm is done, six inches of accumulation is not outside the realm of possibility.

1 P.M. UPDATE: Radar is showing that Central Ohio is about to get another moderate snowfall, will last about 25 to 40 minutes.

 UPDATE: ODOT District 6 currently has 131 snow plows working throughout the eight-county region which includes Delaware, Fayette, Franklin, Madison, Marion, Morrow, Pickaway and Union counties. The current forecast shows snow falling throughout the afternoon, and these 131 plows will remain on the road through rush hour and into the night. 

10:30 A.M. UPDATE: Columbus police are responding to injury-only accident reports, due to a high volume of reports.

There were 52 salt trucks out and officials said they are doing the best they can.

City officials said they were prepared for the snowfall, but crews couldn’t salt roads before the snow arrived.

Crews are concentrating on major roadways, bridges and ramps, dispersing salt that is pre-wetted w/ calcium chloride calcium chloride, CaCl2, chemical compound that is crystalline, lumpy, or flaky, is usually white, and is very soluble in water. The anhydrous compound is hygroscopic; it rapidly absorbs water and is used to dry gases by passing them through it.  to enable the salt to work better. 

Mostly cloudy skies, 1 to 2 inches of more snow and a very cold low of 8 degrees with wind chills near -5 are in tonight’s forecast.
