Winslow Homer in the 1890s: Prout's Neck Observed.


Published in conjunction with a major exhibition of Homer's great seascape and landscape paintings of the 1890s, this volume reproduces more than thirty color plates of his most expressive works. While figures assume importance in The Gulf Stream, The Fisher Girl and several other works, this book focuses on Homer's mastery of marine painting and his grasp of the forces of nature. the waves and rocks of Maine's distinctive seacoast as sensed by Homer Homer, principal figure of ancient Greek literature; the first European poet. Two epic poems are attributed to Homer, the Iliad and the Odyssey.
 is also represented by a number of charcoal charcoal, substance obtained by partial burning or carbonization (destructive distillation) of organic material. It is largely pure carbon. The entry of air during the carbonization process is controlled so that the organic material does not turn to ash, as in a , white chalk and gouache gouache (gwäsh): see watercolor painting.
