The winner was chosen by a panel of three judges: author Heather Neff, publisher and agent Denise Stinson, and young-adult author Dana Davidson. Rukiya Curvey-Johnson, national director of the Shrine of the Black Madonna, announced the winner.

CraZy by Carol George-Rucker of Cincinnati, Ohio, won second place; and third prize was taken by The Last Ship by Vicki Green of Brownstone brownstone, red to brown variety of sandstone. Its unusual color is caused in some instances by the presence of red iron oxide which acts as a cement, binding the sand grains together. , Michigan.
