In commenting on the awards, Helen Kerschner, President of the Beverly Foundation, said "Our Foundation is committed to enhancing the quality of life of seniors and recognizes the significance that transportation access has to this important agenda. The STAR Search Program not only identifies transportation gaps that exist in communities around the country, but also the many wonderful ways that groups and organizations are stepping up to the plate to provide solutions." Peter Kissinger, President of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, added, "For many older drivers, giving up the keys means a complete loss of independence. Supplemental transportation programs such as those recognized with these awards can help older Americans remain in their homes and continue their normal activities."

Cosponsored by the Beverly Foundation and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the STAR Awards were an outgrowth of a STAR Search effort to identify, index and describe Supplemental Transportation Programs for seniors (STPs) across the country. To date, more than 400 STPs have been identified via written surveys and 18 STAR Awards for Excellence have been extolled. The purpose of the effort is to promote community-based efforts to provide supplemental transportation to seniors so that they can continue to get where they need to go when they no longer drive.
