After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill , MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  and the VxSim simulation environment. Simultaneous support on such a wide range of host and target architectures is unprecedented and makes VxWorks 5.2 the most consistent real-time operating system (operating system) Real-Time Operating System - (RTOS) Any operating system where interrupts are guaranteed to be handled within a certain specified maximum time, thereby making it suitable for control of hardware in embedded systems and other time-critical applications.  and development environment available for designing and deploying real time embedded applications.

"Wind River sells time-to-market," said David Wilner, co-founder and vice president of marketing for Wind River Systems. "Making the complete VxWorks 5.2 upgrade immediately available for seven target architectures and VxSim enables our customers to concentrate on getting their products to market faster rather than whether their development environment will keep pace with the industry."

Concurrent operating system upgrades for all core supported architectures is only one of Wind River's latest moves to provide embedded systems developers with an open, off-the-shelf development environment. Wind River is also providing instrumentation hooks for each architecture kernel which will expand the availability of the revolutionary WindView system visualizer to include 68K, CPU32, i960, x86, 29K, SPARC, MIPS, PowerPC and VxSim.

"Wind River continues to refine the technologies that make such a massive concurrent release possible," said David Fraser, vice president of engineering for Wind River Systems. "Utilizing stringent development practices, well designed, common source code, and advanced configuration management systems, we're able to realize the value of widespread availability and pass this along to our customers."

The VxWorks 5.2 upgrade is a compilation of several component releases implementing the latest industry standards including the POSIX (Portable Operating System Interface for UNIX) An IEEE 1003.1 standard that defines the language interface between application programs and the Unix operating system.  1003.1b real-time extensions and the most recent TCP/IP TCP/IP

 networking enhancements.

"Wind River recognized at an early stage that an `open' strategy would be crucial to our success," continued Wilner. "Now, as silicon vendors introduce new embedded CPUs designed for specific industry segments, the need for an open, standards-based development environment that is easily portable has become even more critical. Adhering to industry standards such as POSIX and TCP/IP gives us this advantage."

The portability of VxWorks became well known after Wind River introduced its Board Support Package (BSP BSP

Bromsulphalein, a dye used in the study of liver function. See also sulfobromophthalein clearance test.
) Porting Kit in 1992. The BSP Porting Kit assists developers in porting VxWorks to the platform of their choice. As a result, VxWorks now runs on more than 200 commercial and evaluation boards. Portability is especially important in the embedded systems market where products frequently require completely custom hardware.

VxWorks 5.2 Enhancements

VxWorks 5.2 functionality includes POSIX 1003.1b real-time extensions compliant asynchronous I/O, semaphores, message queues, memory management, scheduling, and queued signals. Updates to the POSIX clock and timer routines and file-handling routines are also included.

Core TCP/IP enhancements available for VxWorks 5.2 include CSLIP (Compressed SLIP) A version of SLIP that compresses the data for transmission.

CSLIP - Compressed SLIP
, Zero Copy TCP (1) (Transmission Control Protocol) The reliable transport protocol within the TCP/IP protocol suite. TCP ensures that all data arrive accurately and 100% intact at the other end. , NFS (Network File System) The file sharing protocol in a Unix network. This de facto Unix standard, which is widely known as a "distributed file system," was developed by Sun. See file sharing protocol and WebNFS.

NFS - Network File System
Server and MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1.  II support for SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol) A widely used network monitoring and control protocol. Data are passed from SNMP agents, which are hardware and/or software processes reporting activity in each network device (hub, router, bridge, etc. .

New architecture ports to the 68060, 68LC040, and 68EC040 are included with the VxWorks 5.2 release. A VxWorks 5.2 Early Access Developer's Release for the PowerPC is also available. Additional ports to the PA-RISC (Precision Architecture-RISC) A proprietary RISC-based CPU architecture from HP that was introduced in 1986. It is the foundation of HP's 3000 and 9000 computer families. See IA-64.  and SH7600 microprocessors are in process.

A new separate installation guide and on-line documentation will be provided, as well as an updated programmer's guide, reference manual and release notes.

WindPower Product Family

As embedded applications increase in complexity and developers face ever greater time to market pressure, the need for new tools to speed the design cycle has reached crisis proportions. The WindPower product family addresses this need, providing a comprehensive set of tools and operating systems for developing embedded applications that can significantly reduce the development cycle. The WindPower product family includes VxWorks, the industry's most powerful and scalable real-time operating system. VxWorks is bundled with powerful core tools for rapid development including an interactive shell, remote source level debugger, C compiler an an incremental loader. The WindPower Tools series includes WindView, Wind C++ Gateway for ObjectCenter, StethoScope and VxSim.
