Wind River Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:WIND), a leading provider of software and services for smart devices in the Internet age, today announced that it will be the first to support Motorola's newest PowerPC(TM) architecture, the MPC (1) (Mobile PC) A handheld or laptop computer. Wind River's debug technology enables automotive and transportation system developers, for whom the processor was designed, to take advantage of unique features brought to the industry by this architecture including on-chip code compression and emulation memory. The MPC565 overcomes a number of significant technological roadblocks faced by automotive developers by helping to reduce application memory requirements and simplify development designs.

"Wind River is one of the key embedded solutions suppliers providing a tool suite to address the benefits of our new MPC565 technology," said Ray Cornyn, Motorola Semiconductor's North American North American

powertrain manager. "We believe the MPC565 will be extremely popular among developers designing applications in the automotive space, and having solid, reliable tool support for this processor is very important to us. Wind River's tool suite will allow powertrain control designers to debug early hardware so they can focus on application development and the incorporation of new features into their systems."

"Wind River has been working closely with Motorola, prior to the release of MPC565, to tailor our development tools for this promising new architecture," said Peter Dawson, vice president and general manager of Wind River's Hardware Software Integration business unit. "It is our strategy to work closely with leading semiconductor manufacturers so that run control emulators and on-chip debuggers are available to developers upon the announcement of silicon availability, as is the case with our MPC565 tool suite."

) interface used for debugging, the MPC565 employs the latest Nexus 5001 "class 3" implementation for on-chip debug interfaces from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers-- Industry Standards and Technology Organization (IEEE-ISTO). Motorola's implementation of the Nexus 5001 debug interface is known as the real-time embedded application An application that permanently resides in an industrial or consumer device. In 2006, more than 69 million motor vehicles, including cars and commercial vehicles were produced worldwide.  because it supports debugger, real-time trace, calibration and rapid prototyping Building a part one layer at a time using a method of additive fabrication such as 3D printing. Such parts are used for concept modeling to determine if the product design meets the customer's expectations.  debug processes that previously required expensive, bandwidth-limited read only memory (ROM) emulators. With this development, Wind River's hardware-assisted tool suite can be used to provide significant savings in tooling costs and a higher level of tool re-use.

The MPC565 also features new on-chip code compression technology that reduces overall application memory requirements. Wind River is currently the only company providing both the compiler and debugger technology need to fully support this code compression technology. Furthermore, the tools are suitable for in-vehicle work when application modifications are necessary, offering tool commonality along both "on-bench" and in-vehicle development environments.

MPC5xx Simulator

In addition, Wind River's cycle accurate MPC5xx simulator can be used as the basis for creating fast, software-focused virtual prototypes with MPC565 applications. The simulator can be used to accurately measure the performance of real engine application software on a MPC5xx-based controller and to evaluate the impact of changes to peripheral devices, peripheral configuration, memory configuration, or bus architecture on system performance.
