The EPG wraps third-party-provided localized program information around the WinTV on-screen computer window that displays a selected channel. Clicking on any currently showing selection in the EPG instantly switches the 125-channel cable-ready tuner built into WinTV to select and display that channel. "This turns your program guide into your channel changer," says Hauppauge CEO Ken Plotkin. "You can preview a few choices in the smaller window, then when you're sure of which you want to watch, just click and it will fill the screen." Windows 98 weaves in software support for watching TV on a PC desktop; Hauppauge WinTV offers the necessary hardware, from tuner to display interface, to make TV viewing possible in a resizable window or full-screen on a PC monitor. All but one of the TV tuner cards to receive initial Windows 98 compatibility certification from WHQL WHQL - Windows Hardware Quality Labs (Microsoft) are Hauppauge WinTV cards. Under Windows 98, clicking on a small TV set icon brings WinTV and the EPG onto the screen, instantly. WinTV under Windows 98 also supports WebTV for Windows, which displays additional information and content in a frame surrounding a standard television picture. The necessary Windows 98 software drivers ship with new WinTV cards, and are available free from the Hauppauge Web site for existing WinTV users who upgrade to Windows 98. The economy-priced WinTV model 404 is $79.95 (all prices suggested US resale at participating resellers). WinTV model 400 adds dbx stereo sound at $99.95.
