WinStar Expands Local Internet Presence.

Taking advantage of its national local presence, WINSTAR COMMUNICATIONS, INC. (NASDAQ: WCII) today announced it has connected its Internet network to the Seattle Internet Exchange Point (SIX). As part of its ongoing efforts to expand its Internet presence, WinStar is connecting its Tier 1 backbone to an increasing number of regional Internet exchange points, bringing a more local architecture to Internet routing. This improves WinStar's network efficiency, speed and quality of service.

WinStar is able to route traffic into local Internet exchange points, avoiding potentially congested peering points and increasing overall quality of service on its network. In addition to the SIX, WinStar is currently connected to Mae-East, Mae-West, AADS, SprintNAP, PacBell NAP and the Tucson Internet Exchange peering points. WinStar has peering arrangements with more than 120 providers, leading to more than 400 interconnections, both public and private.
