Each title includes an additional CD with full-text PDF (Portable Document Format) The de facto standard for document publishing from Adobe. On the Web, there are countless brochures, data sheets, white papers and technical manuals in the PDF format.  that contains plot summary, narrative guide, dramatic reading, and critical analysis.

This ambitious, affordable series of study guides is designed to help students understand difficult literature traditionally assigned in high school or college English classes. While varying somewhat in content and effectiveness, each guide is, at the very least, composed of an enhanced compact disk that not only contains a 60 to 85-minute audio lecture on the individual literary work but also a downloadable, printable PDF file See PDF.  with a 21-27 page booklet that begins with a brief historical/biographical introduction to the author and his times, identifies each character in the novel or play, provides a scene by scene summary of the plot, has review and test questions and answers, and presents a surprisingly extensive bibliography of related material in all media. The disks for Huckleberry Finn, Frankenstein and Macbeth also contain a second file, which is an e-book of the work being explicated. This lacks annotation 1. (programming, compiler) annotation - Extra information associated with a particular point in a document or program. Annotations may be added either by a compiler or by the programmer.  but could be useful to students who have access to a computer but are without their primary text.

No study guide is a substitute for the actual work itself, of course, nor can any anticipate a classroom instructor's particular approach to a piece of literature or predict actual test questions. However, the booklets are as comprehensive as one can hope for, giving a good sense of the text while isolating and amplifying significant, controversial, and thought-provoking issues in the analysis and study questions. It is to the dramatic audio readings that students will turn, hoping the play or novel will come more alive for them. Although these are performed by actors rather than by academics, it is important to note that they consist entirely of the introductory and analytical portion of the PDF file, more fully fleshed out with scholarly details and supported by quotations from the texts.

To a man, the readers do a fine job with the script they are given, O'Connell slipping occasionally into appropriate Southern dialects and Rees, Pressman and Murray differentiating characters when given the opportunity. But in every case, these were written to be more lecture than drama, and in some guides, including, unfortunately, Macbeth, the quotes are frequently overshadowed by the points they've been selected to demonstrate. Nevertheless, the audio format works especially well for Frankenstein. Whenever Sands reads directly from the novel, dark and haunting music wells up as in a classic horror movie and Shelley's words capture the listener's full attention. Whitman's poetry also benefits from its audio production. Strauss's impassioned samplings from "Song of Myself" and "When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom'd When Lilacs Last in the Dooryard Bloom’d
