Both federal and state governments are requiring more tests of students of all ages. This is as true for preservice teachers as it is for 4th-graders.

, for all preservice teachers. Some states have constructed their own tests. Future teachers must achieve acceptable scores on these tests to qualify for certification. Even experienced teachers who move into a new state may have to take the state test if they do not already have a score. Some tests focus on foundations of teaching, while others examine content knowledge.

The end result of so much testing at all levels is anxiety for students and teachers, who must use valuable instructional time to practice for, and administer, tests with very high stakes High Stakes is a British sitcom starring Richard Wilson that aired in 2001. Assessment is a necessary and important part of learning because it can lead to instructional change that benefits students.
