Kirkland Lake Kirkland Lake, mining town, E Ont., Canada. An important gold-mining center, gold was discovered there in 1911 and again in the 1980s at Harker. The mining of iron ore and tourism are two other important industries.  

What is your best time of year?

My favourite season is the fall. That blue Northern sky, the crisp air, the scent of change, the lack of black flies ... that's the time of year when I know I'm alive.

Koya-san in Japan. This Buddhist mountain retreat was established in 805 AD, and offers one of the most incredible, mystical experiences you can imagine, complete with overnight stays in temples, misty cedar forests, etc.
