WildPackets Inc., innovators in advanced network services fault analysis, today announced the scheduled release of EtherPeek VX(TM), their Expert network and VoIP analyzer. Designed for enterprises, service providers, and the field service needs of equipment manufacturers, EtherPeek VX is unique in providing both Ethernet and VoIP diagnostics in one solution. As a software-only solution, EtherPeek VX is designed to be portable and affordable, and increases real-time visibility into converged networks. EtherPeek VX is the only tool a networking professional needs for analyzing both voice and data traffic on enterprise networks.

As enterprises deploy mission-critical Voice over IP applications on their networks to gain operational efficiency and lower costs, EtherPeek VX enables the realization of these goals by increasing network uptime and improving find-to-fix times for network problems. EtherPeek VX can meet the needs of field service, product development, support, and network administrators to troubleshoot VoIP problems and verify Quality of Service (QOS) and voice quality.

"EtherPeek VX is an incredible addition to the EtherPeek family of products. VX will allow me to isolate VoIP traffic, listen to voice quality, adjust my capture to reflect perfect quality and show this all to my customers. VX now takes the fear, uncertainty, and doubt out of VoIP implementations." said Bob Inpyn of Team One Networking, a WildPackets Certified Premier Partner, focused on the VoIP implementation market.

EtherPeek VX can analyze up to 100 open calls simultaneously, without requiring any expensive hardware, to provide unsurpassed value for post-deployment analysis. The product provides per-call analytics and metrics, and supports multiple signaling protocols like SIP, H323, MGCP See MGCP/MEGACO.

MGCP - Media Gateway Control Protocol
, SCS and more. The signaling analysis provides visual flow of messages between participating end-points in a call. The media plane analysis looks at packet-level details of RTP (1) (Rapid Transport Protocol) The protocol used in IBM's High Performance Routing (HPR) system.

(2) (Realtime Transport Protocol) An IP protocol that supports real time transmission of voice and video.
and RTCP See RTP.  streams and evaluates packet delay variations, packet loss, jitter A flicker or fluctuation in a transmission signal or display image. The term is used in several ways, but it always refers to some offset of time and space from the norm. For example, in a network transmission, jitter would be a bit arriving either ahead or behind a standard clock cycle , etc. and provides a passive MOS (1) (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) See MOSFET.

(2) (Mean Opinion Score) The quality of a digitized voice line. It is a subjective measurement that is derived entirely by people listening to the calls and scoring the results from
 value for each call.

"For many years, we have heard about the promise of VoIP," said Mahboud Zabetian, CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of WildPackets. "It's only this year that we have seen significant VoIP adoption within our customer base. We listened to our customer's needs and developed this product quickly to enable faster adoption of VoIP within enterprises. EtherPeek VX provides tremendous value to our current customers, and also allows us to expand our product footprint into a high-growth market segment."

EtherPeek VX provides comprehensive metrics to assess the quality of a VoIP call. In addition, the product provides a highly-differentiated call playback feature to subjectively assess call quality. This unique feature allows users to playback calls with varying jitter, and thereby provides an easy way to gauge the impact of changing network resources on call quality.

About EtherPeek VX

EtherPeek VX provides accurate Quality of Service, Video and Voice quality measurements. Comprehensive drill-down capability can isolate every level of the signaling and media planes for detailed views of VoIP activity and call quality. EtherPeek VX easily detects problems such as inefficient bandwidth utilization, inefficient packet loss recovery, poor compression, sub-optimal jitter buffer length, quality degradation, inadequate Voice Activity Detection (VAD (Value Added Dealer) Same as VAR. ) and long signaling setups. EtherPeek VX will ship in July 2004.
