Wild Bill.

Kudos to The Advocate! Bill Maher William Maher, Jr., (pronounced: /mɑɹ/) (born January 20 1956) is an American comedian, actor, writer, and producer.  is truly a refreshing breath of fresh air ["Bill Maher Doesn't Care If You're Gay (And That's Why We Love Him)," January 16]. His comedy is both funny and topical. He is not afraid to speak out boldly on the issues of the day. If the Democrats ever hope to regain control of the White House, they need to hire Bill Maher as their chief political adviser! Of course, this is quite unlikely as indicated by their unnatural fear of being referred to as "liberals." Bowing to their fear of the Right, they now use the cop-out title "progressives."

WILLIAM A. STODDART Wilmington, Del.

How low have you set the Person of the Year bar that Bill Maher's not caring "if you're gay" is the factor that gets him the title? I understand that you put only straight people on the cover, but even by that standard I'm sure you could have found somebody who actually made a contribution to our community and/or the struggle for full equality. The Advocate's constant litany of cover articles on straight entertainers with the theme "He'd kiss a boy and not regurgitate re·gur·gi·tate

Bill Maher's being named Person of the Year by The Advocate has to be a joke. His list of a dozen worse threats to American youths, including military recruiters, is an ignorant statement, and for The Advocate to point out such a remark with praise is a slap in the face of countless men who gave their lives, limbs, and much more during World Wars I and II, the Vietnam War Vietnam War, conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. , etc. These men made it possible for idiots such as Maher to have the freedom to make such ignorant statements.
