high speed Internet access for use by consumers

PC equipment manufacturers and high speed Internet access service providers can now take advantage of the fully interoperable CopperGold Lite solution (MC143462SK1) and CopperGold Multirate ADSL Solution (MC145660, MPC (1) (Mobile PC) A handheld or laptop computer. Through a series of comprehensive tests, Motorola's CopperGold Lite and Multi-Rate solutions were proven to be interoperable with companies participating in the ADSL Forum's Interoperability Showcase at CES 2000. For additional information on this event, along with a list of companies, please reference the ADSL Forum's press release from Jan. 5.

To achieve interoperability vendors must first complete thorough testing of several criteria including: initialization in·i·tial·ize

, physical connection, second and third layer protocols, and full Internet capability over DSL. Achieving full interoperability at both the chip and systems levels demonstrates Motorola's commitment to making DSL a widely available solution for broadband access.

"Motorola is committed to providing system vendors with a complete range of highly integrated, low-cost and interoperable solutions to deliver high bandwidth Internet access with scalability," said Ron Black, general manager of the Networking and Communications Systems Division of the Semiconductor Products Sector.

"By delivering interoperability, Motorola is assuring equipment providers that CopperGold solutions are compatible with central office and modem systems manufactured by other vendors."

The CopperGold family of ADSL products, built on Motorola's strength in communications processors, includes the highly integrated multi-rate solution and the innovative lite solution. Motorola's interoperable G.Lite chip set consists of a DSL AFE (Apple File Exchange) An earlier Macintosh utility that converted data files between Mac and PC formats. It also included a file translator between IBM's DCA format and MacWrite. , 24-bit DSP (1) (Digital Signal Processor) A special-purpose CPU used for digital signal processing applications (see definition #2 below). It provides ultra-fast instruction sequences, such as shift and add, and multiply and add, which are commonly used in math-intensive  with integrated PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

The MC143462SK1 is designed to be easily upgradable to future standards and is compatible with existing G.992 standards.

The CopperGold Multi-Rate Solution also offers scalability for CO suppliers, integration of the ATM transmission convergence sublayer to improve port density, and support of UTOPIA level 2 ports.

The interoperable CopperGold Multi-Rate Transceiver is designed for use in router and set-top box applications, as well as digital subscriber line access multiplexer A Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM) allows telephone lines to make faster connections to the Internet. It is a network device, located near the customer's location, that connects multiple customer Digital Subscriber Lines (DSLs) to a high-speed Internet  (DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexor) A central office (CO) device for ADSL service that intermixes voice traffic and DSL traffic onto a customer's DSL line. It also separates incoming phone and data signals and directs them onto the appropriate carrier's network. See DSL. ) and line card applications for the central office (CO).

The transceiver supports both the ITU full rate (G.992.1), and G.Lite (G.992.2) specifications. By integrating the digital interface, DSP, and AFE on a single chip, solutions based on the MC145660 and MPC850 communications processor offer superior performance (21 kft reach) in an extremely small footprint.
