Times of crisis bring out the best in some people and the worst in others. The New York City Police Department is investigating a Florida man for apparently duping several September 11 relief agencies with claims that his wealthy male domestic partner was killed during the attack on the World Trade Center.

Patric Ian Henn, 27, is suspected of having collected more than $25,000 in emergency cash relief from several agencies, including the American Red Cross and the United Way. Officials at the Empire State Pride Agenda, which has been assisting gay and lesbian survivors with the group's own relief fund, initially helped Henn file some of his claims but became suspicions when he could not produce evidence to support his assertions about his partner.

Henn seems to have sealed his fate by contacting Florida gay newspaper The Express to complain about ESPA. The Express launched its own investigation into Henn and his claims and discovered he was apparently a single drifter and that his purported partner never existed.

As of early March, more than 100 people were under NYPD investigation for allegedly scamming more than $1 million from WTC charities, according to the New York Post.
