Why do some people who go to camp have to have a physical exam by their doctor?

Dear Dr. Cory: Why do some people who go to camp have to have a physical exam by their doctor? Michelle Thibadeau Las Vegas, Nevada

Dear Michelle, Many camps require children to have a physical exam. The people who run the camp want campers to be healthy so their camp experience will be as fun and enjoyable as possible. They also want to know about any health problems that campers have so that the camp staff can be prepared to handle these problems.

During the physical exam, the doctor will check your ears, nose, and throat. She will listen to your heart and lungs, check your abdomen, and check your muscles and bones.

This is a good time to ask your doctor or nurse practitioner about any concerns that you have about your health. It is better to take care of these problems now so they don't keep you from enjoying activities at camp. If you are on any special medicines, have any allergies, or are unable to do certain activities, this is also the time to talk about them with your doctor or nurse practitioner.
