Why I Am a Baptist: Reflections on Being Baptist in the 21st Century.

Edited by Cecil P. Staton Jr., Macon: Smyth and Helwys, 1999. 204 pp.

Borrowing the title of a famous essay by Walter Rauschenbusch Walter Rauschenbusch (October 4, 1861 - July 25, 1918) was a Christian Theologian and Baptist Minister. He was a key figure in the Social Gospel movement in the USA. Evolution of Thought , Cecil Staton Cecil Staton (born January 26, 1958) is a politician in the U.S. state of Georgia. He is a member of the Republican Party and serves in the Georgia Senate as representative of the 18th district. , senior editor of Smyth and Helwys Publishers, has put together a remarkable collection of the best and brightest of the Baptist world at the conclusion of the 20th century. A total of twenty-seven essays, including one from Staton himself, make up this collection. Each writer was given the assignment and the freedom to address the question, "Why am I a Baptist?" The resulting collection of essays is a representative mosaic of contemporary Baptists.

While all of these essays are informative and well written, several deserve particular mention. Former President Jimmy Carter issues a call for all Baptists to work together in a spirit of reconciliation rather than division. Bill J. Leonard provides a provocative discussion of the Baptist tradition. Rather than the traditional emphasis on Baptist "distinctives," Leonard prefers to describe Baptist "paradoxes" that actually serve to define us better. Molly T. Marshall, whose courage and strength has been a model to many Baptists, describes why she has remained a Baptist in spite of the difficulty she has faced in recent years as a woman following God's call on her life. This article will inspire all those wounded from the twenty years TWENTY YEARS. The lapse of twenty years raises a presumption of certain facts, and after such a time, the party against whom the presumption has been raised, will be required to prove a negative to establish his rights.

. Walter B. Shurden and Cecil Sherman are also contributors to this collection of essays, both of whom provide keen insight into the Baptist tradition.

As good as this book is, one weakness should be noted. Staton notes in the Introduction that the book is an "attempt to capture what is best about Baptists by giving voice to the reflections of twenty-seven leaders in Baptist life today." For this book to be representative of the larger Baptist tent, at least one or two articles from the Fundamentalist element in Baptist life should have been included. In fact, the diversity in Baptist life is so prevalent in this book that the omission of the Fundamentalist perspective becomes quite obvious. Still, this minor weakness should not detract from detract from
