Why Beauty Is Truth: A History of Symmetry.

WHY BEAUTY IS TRUTH: A History of Symmetry IAN STEWART Ian Stewart is a name shared by several people:
  • Ian Stewart (racing driver) (born 1929), Scottish Formula One driver
  • Ian Stewart (Conservative politician) (born 1935), former MP for Hitchin, England

The concept of symmetry has been pondered for thousands of years. Its elegance and beauty have their roots in mathematics, writes Stewart, a professor of mathematics at the University of warwick In the 1960s and 1970s, Warwick had a reputation as a politically radical institution.[3] More recently, the University has been seen as a favoured institution of the British New Labour government. . The ancient Babylonians developed quadratic equations, the first mathematical representations of symmetry. Starting there, Stewart traces the timeline of mathematical discovery and innovation relating to relating to relate prepconcernant

symmetry, introducing important mathematical concepts and the historic figures behind them. Stewart uses clear language to explain the often-complex mathematics behind symmetry. He even guides readers through the intellectual maze of how symmetry might reconcile Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity Noun 1.
