"A lot of the stores are in areas that are highly competitive," said Unified Western spokesman Tom Schaffner. He said money from the sales would provide capital for the wholesale business, as well as other profitable units such as financial and insurance services. The cooperative has also shed other unprofitable subsidiaries, such as printing services and a small trucking firm.
