UNIFIED Western Grocers Inc., one of L.A. County's largest private companies, is getting Out of the grocery store business.

The markets, under such names as SayMax, Thriftway and Apple, have been under-performers for Unified Western, whose main business is wholesale grocery distribution. The 12 stores that will be either closed or sold are in northern California Northern California, sometimes referred to as NorCal, is the northern portion of the U.S. state of California. The region contains the San Francisco Bay Area, the state capital, Sacramento; as well as the substantial natural beauty of the redwood forests, the northern  and Portland.

"A lot of the stores are in areas that are highly competitive," said Unified Western spokesman Tom Schaffner. He said money from the sales would provide capital for the wholesale business, as well as other profitable units such as financial and insurance services. The cooperative has also shed other unprofitable subsidiaries, such as printing services and a small trucking firm.

Unified Western, which had $3 billion in sales in 2002, has 700 members owning 4,000 grocery stores.
