Wholesale Club breaks ground in Jersey City.

Turning the ceremonial first shovels of earth, Congressman Robert Menendez, Mayor Brett Schundler and BJ's wholesale executives marked the construction of a 116,000 square-foot BJ's Wholesale Club in New Jersey on Monday, October 4.

BJ's will be the lead tenant in the new Metro Plaza, a 240,000 square-foot retail mall being constructed in an Urban Enterprise Zone, adjacent to the Newport Center Mall.

BJ's already operates five clubs in the state in East Rutherford, Edison, Maple Shade, Ocean Township, and Roxbury. A seventh BJ's club is planned for Watchung early next year.

"We're looking forward to opening in Jersey City this winter. Based on the success of our other clubs in New Jersey, we expect to do very well here," said Jack Nugent, BJ's president. "The Metro Plaza is a great location for our club. It's accessible to the Manhattan business community, which will be able to take advantage of a significant tax break created by the Urban Enterprise Zone." Businesses and consumers from Bayonne, Hoboken, Secaucus, North Bergen, Union City, and West New York also will shop BJ's in Jersey City for name-brand food and general merchandise. Shoppers can find one-stop conveniences including a tire service center, optical department and travel club. BJ's is the only club in the nation to offer an exclusive credit card to its members. Any small business or individual consumer may join BJ's for 425 annually. There are no membership restrictions.

The new club will create over 200 jobs and will provide a substantial economic boom to the Jersey City community when it opens this winter.

G & S Development is the owner and developer of the Metro Plaza and National Bulk Carriers is the owner of the 52.5 acre Hudson Exchange site on which Metro Plaza is being constructed.

BJ's currently operates 47 clubs in 12 eastern states from Maine to Florida. A division of Waban Inc. (NYSE: WBN), BJ's is headquartered in Natick, MA and posted sales totaling over $1.8 billion in 1992 (a 25 percent increase over 1991 sales).
