Who says protests don't work? (On the Line).


Bloomington, Indiana Bloomington is a city in south central Indiana. Located about 50 miles southwest of Indianapolis, it is the seat of Monroe County. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Bloomington had a total population of 69,291, making it the 7th largest city in Indiana.  

Photographer Paul Martens captured the efforts of several tree-sitters who protested the proposed sale of acreage in Indiana's Yellowwood yellowwood, common name for any species of the genus Cladrastis, leguminous trees of the family Leguminosae (pulse family). Three of the four species are native to China and Japan. The other, C.  State Forest. The sale would have resulted in the building of a $15 million apartment complex. The protest began on March 24, 2001, when nineteen-year-old Tracy "Dolphin" McNeely set up house on a wooden platform sixty feet above the forest floor. Other protesters joined McNeely. The action ended on December 10 when the Indiana Department of Natural Resources The Indiana Department of Natural Resources is the agency of the U.S. state of Indiana charged with maintaining natural areas such as state parks, state forests, recreation areas, etc.  nixed the sale.
