Whittaker Electronic Systems awarded $1.6 million contract for communications gear on United Arab Emirates Apache helicopters.

), with headquarters in Simi Valley, was awarded a $1.6 million contract to provide secure communications equipment for AH-64 Apache attack helicopters operated by the United Arab Emirates United Arab Emirates, federation of sheikhdoms (2005 est. pop. 2,563,000), c.30,000 sq mi (77,700 sq km), SE Arabia, on the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.  (UAE).

The 12-month contract calls for Whittaker to deliver 33 sets of its cockpit mounted Wideband Secure Voice and Data Encryption (WSVDE) systems to the UAE. The WSVDE, widely used on U.S. and foreign allies aircraft, will provide the UAE Apache helicopter crews with secure voice and data communications capability between air crews and ground-based communications operators.

The WSVDE system delivered to the UAE is the latest state-of-the-art, exportable secure communications systems available to non-NATO member nations.

Delivery of the WSVDE sets to the UAE is governed by a Foreign Military Sales That portion of United States security assistance authorized by the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961, as amended, and the Arms Export Control Act of 1976, as amended. This assistance differs from the Military Assistance Program and the International Military Education and Training Program  (FMS FMS - Flexible Manufacturing System (factory automation). ) program for the Apache helicopter headed by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM CECOM Communications Electronics Command (US Army)

Included in the Whittaker contract is a one-week training program in the UAE, which is designed to familiarize Apache pilots, aircrews and maintenance teams with the operation and support of the communications sets. Whittaker will also provide system spares and test equipment.

"This UAE contract is an important step toward expanding our business in the region. It holds promise for follow-on orders as the Emirates deploys secure communications across its defense forces," said Clint Deisenroth, president of Whittaker Electronic Systems.

Whittaker Electronic Systems will build the WSVDE systems at its facilities in Simi Valley. The company has produced and delivered more than 300 WSVDE secure communications sets since 1981, for use on U.S. and foreign allies aircraft as well as ground-based and shipboard systems.
