Whitney, playing out of Riveridge, shot a 78 in Thursday's third round for a total of 224, trailing champion Ryan Gilmour of Willamette Valley The Willamette Valley (pronounced [wɪˈlæ.mɪt], with the accent on the second syllable) is the region in northwest Oregon in the United States that surrounds the Willamette River as it proceeds northward from its  at 216 and Matt Marcum of Alderbrook at 223. Gilmour shot 70-74-72 over the three days to earn medalist honors after finishing fourth at the Class 4A state championships for Canby in May.

Whitney, who will be a senior at Sheldon in the fall, finished 10th at the prep state championships in May.

He was sixth at last year's junior stroke-play championships, but was the junior match-play champion.

Jesse Schutte, representing Sandpines, finished in a tie for 11th at 234.

On the girls' side, Jessica Black of Awbrey Glen in Bend was medalist with a 78-73-73-224. Lindsay Eide of Bend was second at 230, followed by Jillian Ferrante of Royal Oaks at 232.

 and Arnold Palmer joined local favorites Peter Jacobsen, Casey Martin, Bob Gilder and Brian Henninger among the 24 players who have committed to play in this year's Fred Meyer Challenge, to be played Aug. 4-6 at The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club in Portland.

Basketball

The 30th annual Oregon Athletic Coaches Association all-star boys basketball series will be held at Clackamas Community College Clackamas Community College (CCC) is a community college located in Oregon City, Oregon, United States. It is located at the junction of Oregon Route 213 and Molalla Avenue, nearly at the southern edge of the Portland, Oregon metropolitan area.  in Oregon City today and Saturday.

Four games will be played each day - Class 1A (2 p.m.), Class 2A (4 p.m.), Class 3A (6 p.m.) and Class 4A (8 p.m.). Ticket prices are $6 for adults, $4 for high school students, and $3 for senior citizens and grade school students.

Several local players will participate in the all-star series.

The 1A West team includes Jimmy Craig and Jason Powell of Mohawk, John Eastburn and Kyle Smith of Triangle Lake, and Brett Thompson of Elkton. Mohawk's Bart Rothenberger is one of the head coaches.

The 2A all-stars include Oakridge's Uni Prenevost and Monroe's Cory James on the West team, and Yoncalla's Todd Grassman and Gold Beach's Dustin Marsh, Nathan Duey and Geoff Zuber on the East roster. Glen Litterell of Gold Beach will help coach the East.

Joe See, who played the most minutes of any freshman on the Oregon State basketball team last season, has decided to transfer to another school. The 5-foot-11 guard averaged 6.1 points, 1.9 assists and 1.8 rebounds as one of three players on the team to compete in all 29 games last season, averaging 23.1 minutes.

"Joe made a decision that he felt was best for him," new OSU coach Jay John said. "He is a quality student-athlete who will be a great asset to the program he chooses."

Baseball

Scott Nelson hit two home runs and had four RBIs, and Cody Newell pitched a complete game as the Pepsi Challengers defeated West Eugene 5-3 Thursday in an American Legion American Legion, national association of male and female war veterans, founded (1919) in Paris. Nelson hit a solo homer in the fourth inning and a three-run shot in the fifth for the Challengers (13-4). J.C. Nagler added two hits, including a double.

Newell recorded seven strikeouts in picking up the victory.

West Eugene got two hits each from Corey Kent, Ryan Royster and Jordan Bemis.

Oregon State outfielder Aaron Mathews of John Day was named an honorable mention freshman all-American by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, the Beavers announced Thursday.

Mathews, an honorable mention all-Pac-10 selection as well, hit .338 with two home runs, 26 RBIs and 10 stolen bases as OSU's starting center fielder.

Crew

Thurston High graduate Emmy Gardner was one of eleven members of the OSU men's and women's crew teams named to the Pac-10 Conference all-academic first team Thursday, with nine more garnering honorable mention.

Earning first-team recognition were seniors Lauren Sommers, Joy Jordan, Karen Hopfer, Kara Kara (kär`ə), river, c.140 mi (230 km) long, NE European and NW Siberian Russia.
