Whitestone reports on second quarter M&A activity.


Second quarter merger and acquisition deal value for 10 categories of publishing, information and training companies had its best showing in seven years, according to according to
prep.

). The total value of 144 deals in the second quarter was $3.112 billion, an increase of 969% over the $33.3 million reported for 134 deals in the second quarter of 2006.

The number of deals for the Trade/Magazines/Trade Shows category fell from 24 in last year's period to 16 this year, while the value of those deals fell 28%, going from $310million in the second quarter of 2006 to $225 million in the period this year.

The largest deals of the quarter included: Thomson Corp.'s purchase of Reuters for $17.1 billion; Apax Partners and OMERS OMERS Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System  Capital Partners acquisition of Thomson Learning for $7.75 billion; Google's purchase of DoubleClick for $3.1 billion; Primedia's sale of its Enthusiast A person who enjoys using computers and electronic equipment. Enthusiasts like technology and are willing to learn more of the ins and outs of a product than the average consumer, who just wants to use it. An enthusiast is more like a "prosumer." See consumer and prosumer.  Media division to Source Interlink INTERLINK - A commercial product comprising hardware and software for file transfer between IBM and VAX computers.  Companies for $1.2 billion; and, Pearson's acquisition of eCollege for $538 million.

Not including the three biggest deals, the largest increases in dollar value by media sector were: Consumer Magazines (from $32 million to $1.5 billion); Business/Legal ($344 million to $1.8 billion); Internet Content ($441 million to $634 million); and, Training ($395 million to $624 million). Besides Trade Magazines/Trade Shows, declines were shown in Education/Reference ($180 million to $43 million) and Consumer Book Publishing book publishing. The term publishing means, in the broadest sense, making something publicly known. Usually it refers to the issuing of printed materials, such as books, magazines, periodicals, and the like.  ($1.1 billion to $50 million).
