White Rock Networks' Service Edge Concentrator Selected by Citynet for IP Aggregation Closer to the Network Edge; VLX300 Displaces Large, Expensive Routers to Deliver Cost-Effective T1-Based IP Services to Retail and Wholesale Customers.

RICHARDSON, Texas -- White Rock Networks, a leading provider of next-generation optical transport systems for metro networks, today announced that Citynet, a facilities-based provider serving retail and wholesale customers in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest, has selected its VLX300 Service Edge Concentrator for cost-effective aggregation of T1- based IP services near the network's edge.

The VLX300 provides up to 12 channelized DS3 interfaces for aggregation of T1-based IP business services, typically delivered with PPP, MLPPP, HDLC, or Frame Relay to enterprise routers at the customer premises. It also provides two options for the backhaul of consolidated IP traffic: clear channel DS3, which utilizes Frame Relay virtual connections for customer segregation, and GbE which utilizes VLAN tagging to segregate customer traffic. Leased DS3 facility (Off-net) cost savings are realized by a significant reduction in DS3s through the elimination of partially filled circuits and statistical multiplexing. Central Office or POP aggregation (On-net) savings are also derived through router port cost reduction when a consolidated and efficiently packed GbE interface is provided to the router in place of channelized DS3s.

"As we roll out new wire centers, aggregating voice and data as close to the customer as possible is critical for conserving network resources and providing good service levels," said Eric Krichbaum, Director of Retail Engineering for Citynet. "The VLX300 fits that process well by being completely transparent to the end user, while still giving us the aggregation we were looking to achieve."

White Rock also offers the VLX400 Service Edge Concentrator which provides all of the same data functionality as the VLX300 with the added benefit of DS0 grooming which separates voice and data circuits and consolidates the voice traffic onto channelized DS3 trunks, thus reducing 3/1/0 DCS requirements at the main Central Office or POP.

"With the VLX300 costing about one-fourth the price of the equivalent number of DS3 ports on a typical router, the savings derived by deploying the VLX300 can pay for the entire edge router," said Paul Forzisi, Vice President of Marketing of White Rock Networks. The VLX300 and VLX400 are one rack unit (1RU) high and fully NEBS Level 3 certified. The VLX300 will be on display at TelecomNEXT in Las Vegas March 21-22 (Booth # 1255) and CompTel/ASCENT Spring 2006 in San Diego March 19-21 (Booth # 500).
