White Pine Software Releases Exodus' For Macintosh 6.0; The First Complete X11R6 Server for MacOS; The First Open Transport 1.1 Native X server.

NASHUA, N.H.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 2, 1996--White Pine Software, Inc., today announced a major new release and immediate availability of eXodus for Macintosh, its market leading X Window Server for Macintosh, Power Macintosh See Power Mac.

(computer) Power Macintosh - Apple Computer's personal computer based on the PowerPC, introduced on 1994-03-14. Existing 680x0 code (both applications and device drivers) run on Power Macintosh systems without modification via a Motorola 68LC040 emulator.
, and other MacOS compatible computers. This new version compliments White Pine's leadership role in X Server technology and contains a broad range of software enhancements, many of which are focused on delivering the most important benefits of emerging Macintosh and X technology to the desktop user.

eXodus 6.0 is the first X server available that is Open Transport 1.1 "native" and fine tuned for Apple's MacOS System 7.5.3, both of which were released in March. Open Transport is the new communication subsystem of the MacOS, designed to take full advantage of the PowerPC and PCI-bus architectures predominant in current Macintosh models Following is a brief summary of the current models in Apple's Macintosh family, all of which use Intel CPU chips. For a list of some of the earliest Macs by model number, see Macintosh models - early. . "X on the Macintosh is taking another big step forward thanks to the simultaneous availability of Open Transport and the OT-native eXodus," states Killko Caballero cab·al·le·ro

eXodus 6.0 is also the first complete X11R6 server for MacOS. A product of the non-profit X Consortium Inc., X11R6 is the current release of the X protocol standard. Based on X11R6, eXodus fully implements the advances made recently in X technology, including new font types and features, new X extensions such as XSYNC, XTEST, and BIG-REQUESTS, and a handful of new window management features. eXodus includes many new font sets, including the 100dpi, Speedo An earlier scalable font technology from Bitstream Inc., Cambridge, MA (www.bitstream.com). Speedo fonts used the .SPD extension. See FaceLift. , Type1, Asian, and CDE (1) (Computer Desktop Encyclopedia) What you are reading at this very moment. See About this product.

An essential element of the 6.0 release is plug-and-play seamlessness with the Common Desktop Environment (CDE). CDE is a standard established by a group of professionals representing most of the major Unix workstation vendors. Its essential goal is to offer a unified desktop interface for all Unix workstations, and potentially other computers. eXodus has been enhanced, tested, and certified to be compliant with a variety of CDE products including Solaris CDE, TriTeal TED, and Digital Unix See Tru64 Unix.  CDE. "Unix users have been waiting for good CDE-based products for a long time," says Steve Roche, Director of Product Marketing at White Pine. "They can rest assured that CDE-compatibility will remain absolutely essential in current and future releases of eXodus."

Another highly notable emerging technology that has been addressed in eXodus 6.0 is Windows-via-X. A number of products, including NTrigue from Insignia Solutions, Inc., provide access to MS Windows applications from X servers. eXodus has been designed to overcome certain compatibility limitations inherent with running Windows applications on a Macintosh. The result is that eXodus can be easily set up to connect to Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  hosts that have NTrigue or similar software installed, and run sessions with one or more Windows applications appearing seamlessly on the Mac desktop.

Further broadening its support for popular remote connectivity options, eXodus 6.0 introduces White Pine PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using , a PPP and SLIP driver for the MacOS. White Pine PPP has many key features and is compatible with a wide variety of other connectivity products in addition to eXodus. With support for SLIP, PPP, Tek Xpress and Apple Remote Access included in every package, eXodus now offers the most comprehensive remote connectivity support of any X server available today.

In addition to extra eXodus for Macintosh components like new font sets, the CD-ROM includes on-line manuals, demo software including eXodus for Windows, and Adobe Acrobat readers in English, French and German languages. The CD-ROM is built in a "hybrid" format, and is thus usable on both Macintosh and MS Windows systems.
