, uses some of the author's ancestors as the basis for several of the main characters--the poor, rebellious, irreverent yet decent to the core Willie Burke and his wealthy slave-owning friend Robert Perry. Their relationship with each other, and with abolitionist Abigail Dowling, forms a dramatic sub-plot that's often dwarfed by the brutality of the war itself. This is also the story of beautiful slave girl Flower Jamison. Flower is a marked woman, not only because of her beauty and her race, but also because of her insatiable thirst to learn and to teach others. She and Abigail, with whom she starts a school, are victimized by wartime sentiments and the post-bellum rise of the forerunners of the Ku Klux Klan Ku Klux Klan (k' klŭks klăn), designation mainly given to two distinct secret societies that played a part in American history, although other less important groups have also used .
