In this sequel to the Newbery Honor The Newbery Honor is a citation given by the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association (ALA). The Newbery Honor is given to worthy runners-up for the Newbery Medal, a higher honor.  Book, Belle Prater's Boy, Ruth White has returned to Gypsy and her cousin, Woodrow. Now a year older, the two cousins seek Woodrow's mother. With new friend Cassie, the three take a bus from their rural backwoods community to a small urban community where they plan on showing Belle's picture around in their attempt to locate her. The story is again told by Gypsy, who is now a 13-year-old longing for a little bit of freedom.

On the bus, they meet Joseph, an African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race.  boy also in search of a lost parent. Through Joseph, they are introduced to the world of prejudice. Although it is too cool to sit outside and eat, Joseph is not allowed to come into a local diner. Deciding on first helping Joseph, they are able to locate his aunt and another clue in Verb 1. clue in - provide someone with a clue; "Can you clue me in?"

 finding Belle Prater. But it is not until they return to the Prater home to clear it of the last vestiges of personal items that they find a real clue. Stranded in the old cabin overnight because of snow, Woodrow finds a letter his mother had left him. The letter does not lead directly to his mother, but with the help of Joseph's aunt, the mystery is finally resolved to Woodrow's satisfaction. Janis Flint-Ferguson, Assoc.
