Now a year older, the two cousins seek Woodrow's mother. With new friend Cassie, the three take a bus from their rural backwoods community to a small urban community where they plan on showing Belle's picture around in their attempt to locate her. The story is again told by Gypsy, who is now a 13-year-old longing for a little bit of freedom. Through Joseph, they are introduced to the world of prejudice. Although it is too cool to sit outside and eat, Joseph is not allowed to come into a local diner. But it is not until they return to the Prater home to clear it of the last vestiges of personal items that they find a real clue. Stranded in the old cabin overnight because of snow, Woodrow finds a letter his mother had left him.
