Now a year older, the two cousins seek Woodrow's mother. With new friend Cassie, the three take a bus from their rural backwoods community to a small urban community where they plan on showing Belle's picture around in their attempt to locate her. The story is again told by Gypsy, who is now a 13-year-old longing for a little bit of freedom. On the bus, they meet Joseph, an African American African American Multiculture A person having origins in any of the black racial groups of Africa. See Race. boy also in search of a lost parent. Through Joseph, they are introduced to the world of prejudice. Although it is too cool to sit outside and eat, Joseph is not allowed to come into a local diner. But it is not until they return to the Prater home to clear it of the last vestiges of personal items that they find a real clue.
