To begin her study of Jesus as bridegroom in the gospel, Blickenstaff explores biblical texts and extra-biblical literature concerning bridegrooms and weddings. Then she examines how typical allegorical readings of the parables of the wedding feast and the ten bridesmaids tend to implicate the deity in act of violent and eschatological retribution and how bridegroom Jesus exacerbates conflict; how the Matthean bridegroom disrupts families of origin to create a fictive family based on allegiance to him; and the bridegroom's teachings on marriage and divorce in the Sermon on the Mount. She concludes that the bridegroom's presents holds the potential for joy and celebration, but is also fraught with danger. T&T Clark is an imprint of Continuum.
