Which companies are shopping for dancers: a guide to 1997 auditions around the world.

Dance Magazine's first annual audition listings provide company and audition information on a wide range of companies--from from ballet companies with over 70 dancers to small modern companies to folk dance folk dance, primitive, tribal, or ethnic form of the dance, sometimes the survival of some ancient ceremony or festival. The term is used also to include characteristic national dances, country dances, and figure dances in costume to folk tunes.  troupes. Companies are separated into U.S. and international categories and are listed alphabetically. The first paragraph of each listing includes general company information, such as styles of dance performed, number of dancers, and number of performances per year. We asked each company if it provides health insurance, shoes, and company class, and have listed only the benefits each company provides. The second paragraph consists of 1997 audition information.

A few of the companies listed do not hold open auditions but will schedule private auditions for exceptional dancers. Many dancers in major ballet companies are selected from apprentice programs or the company's affiliated school. Some companies, noted in the listings, accept unpaid apprentices, while many others pay apprentices. For pre-professional dancers, becoming an apprentice or attending an affiliated school is a good way to be considered for a company. Otherwise, contact the company and be prepared to send in a resume, photos, and a video.
