Nonsmokers are imperiled by their exposure to tobacco smoke, according to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. The council, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences, came to its conclusion after analyzing scientific literature on the emotionally charged question. While stopping short of making public health recommendations, the council suggested that studies showing an increased incidence of lung problems in children of smokers make it "prudent to eliminate environmental tobacco smoke environmental tobacco smoke (ETS/passive smoke), n the gaseous by-product of burning tobacco products, including but not limited to commercially manufactured cigarettes and cigars; contains toxic elements harmful to the health of adults and children exposure from the environments of small children." It also found that exposure to smoke increases the incidence of lung cancer lung cancer, cancer that originates in the tissues of the lungs. Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in the United States in both men and women. Like other cancers, lung cancer occurs after repeated insults to the genetic material of the cell. in nonsmokers: Several population studies have shown a 30 percent higher lung cancer incidence in non-smoking spouses of smokers than in non-smoking couples. |
