Where's the corps?


After reading Wendy Perron's review of American Ballet American Ballet was the first professional ballet company George Balanchine created in the United States. The company was founded with the help of Lincoln Kirstein, and was populated by students of Kirstein and Balanchine's School of American Ballet.  Theatre's spring season ("Reviews," Oct. 2006), I was baffled by her omission of the corps de ballet corps de bal·let

 has become under Kevin McKenzie's artistic direction. Promoting a star system has lessened the importance of the ABT corps. The performance, style, and homogeneity of the group of artists forming the corps of such companies as the Kirov Ballet, the Paris Opera Ballet The Paris Opéra Ballet is the official ballet company of the Opéra national de Paris, otherwise known as the Palais Garnier, though known more popularly simply as the Paris Opéra. , or The Royal Ballet set these exceptional ballet companies apart from many other very good ones.

Perron's review emphasizes the painful reality that, despite the presence of exceptional dancers, ABT's performances leave something to be desired.

 replies: When reviewing a whole season in a mere thousand words, a writer has to make difficult choices. I chose to concentrate on the company premieres and some of the highlights of the casting. Another writer may have devoted half the review to ABT's excellent corps.
