Seeing a notice in a Berkeley, California Berkeley is a city on the east shore of San Francisco Bay in Northern California, in the United States. Its neighbors to the south are the cities of Oakland and Emeryville. To the north is the city of Albany and the unincorporated community of Kensington.  post office in 1942. a woman (who like all the characters remains nameless throughout the story) goes home. packs their belongings and, with her son and daughter, boards a train bound for an internment camp for "enemy aliens" in the Utah desert. Her husband had been arrested right after Pearl Harbor Pearl Harbor, land-locked harbor, on the southern coast of Oahu island, Hawaii, W of Honolulu; one of the largest and best natural harbors in the E Pacific Ocean. In the vicinity are many U.S. military installations, including the chief U.S.  by the FBI and sent to a camp elsewhere. Each of the five chapters tells of their experiences from a different family member's point of view. The family returns to find their home vandalized, and the father comes back broken and embittered em·bit·ter
