Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen in 1770 (according to some accounts, in 1768), the son of an Icelander who had settled in Denmark and there carried on the trade

Hansen's royal carriage depot in Copenhagen was converted to house his collections. M. G. Bindesboll produced marvellously coloured interiors to set off Thorvaldsen's cool marble. It was Bindesboll's first and finest job (1848) and is excellently celebrated for our time in Thorvaldsen's Museum, by Bente Lange, Arkitektens Forlag, Copenhagen, 375 DKr.
