Biography Thorvaldsen was born in Copenhagen in 1770 (according to some accounts, in 1768), the son of an Icelander who had settled in Denmark and there carried on the trade returned to Denmark Denmark (dĕn`märk), Dan. Danmark, officially Kingdom of Denmark, kingdom (2005 est. pop. 5,432,000), 16,629 sq mi (43,069 sq km), N Europe. after a life largely spent in Rome, C. F. Hansen's royal carriage depot in Copenhagen was converted to house his collections. M. G. Bindesboll produced marvellously coloured interiors to set off Thorvaldsen's cool marble. It was Bindesboll's first and finest job (1848) and is excellently celebrated for our time in Thorvaldsen's Museum, by Bente Lange, Arkitektens Forlag, Copenhagen, 375 DKr.
