Wheels of fortune: prefixes.


Sometimes the beginning of a word has a meaning of its own. That part of the word is called a prefix The beginning or to add to the beginning. To prefix a header onto a packet means to place the header characters in front of the packet. "To prefix" at the beginning is the opposite of "to append" characters at the end. See prepend.

. Prefixes tell you a lot about the meanings of words. In the word bicycle bicycle, light, two-wheeled vehicle driven by pedals. The name velocipede is often given to early forms of the bicycle and to its predecessor, the dandy horse, a two-wheeled vehicle moved by the thrust of the rider's feet upon the ground. , the prefix bi- bi- word element [L.], two.

pref.
1. Two: bilateral.

2. Both: binaural.

 means "two" The last part, cycle, means "wheel." Bicycle means "two" (bi) "wheels" (cycle). The chart below tells you what some other prefixes mean. Now use these prefixes to make a name for each of the wheeled vehicles Noun 1. wheeled vehicle - a vehicle that moves on wheels and usually has a container for transporting things or people; "the oldest known wheeled vehicles were found in Sumer and Syria and date from around 3500 BC"
axle - a shaft on which a wheel rotates
