Wheels in motion: Ian Hardman take rims to the next level.

Ian Hardman and his partners drive their passion for automobiles and business into Davin Wheels, the Providence, R.I.-based company that developed the first continuous motion wheel.

Hardman's brain was spinning with the idea of becoming an entrepreneur several years before he became the CEO of Davin Wheels. Hardman, 38, cut hedges, washed blinds, and eventually started a lawn-mowing business as a teen. "My dream has always been to remain independent in thought and establishing my own financial position," says Hardman.

Davin Wheels continues to develop innovative products such as custom wheels for the Hummer H2, and will finish 2003 with revenues around $7 million. Hardman, who has two business partners, says if you're interested in entering the automotive business think carefully about whether you want to do detailing, accessories, or full-fledged manufacturing. Somewhere did Hardman learn the most valuable lessons as a growing entrepreneur? Right in his own backyard--sort of. "Make the world your classroom," he says,recommending activities such as volunteering at local businesses, attending your church's trustee board meetings, and taking business classes, Here are some additional tips from Hardman on how to successfully develop any business:

* Maintain competitive advantage. Selecting a business which fulfills a need in the marketplace.

* Leek at your business" cash position. After identifying the product/service, figure out how to meet your business' needs with the amount of cash that you have. Structure your business to fit your budget, and get advice from a financing company or others.

* Manage your cash flow. Keep accurate records of hew much you're spending and selling in order to set realistic financial goals.
