This guide is presented as a quick overview of the basic principles of wheelchair design and prescription. Most of the text, interspersed with clear and meaningful illustrations, deals with different characteristics of basic wheelchairs, seating systems, and pertinent measurements needed in choosing the right chair. Geared for the consumer or health care professional who has never worked with wheelchairs, the book also gives helpful hints for operation and maintenance of wheelchairs. There is one appendix, which lists manufacturers of sports or lightweight chairs.

The guide does not, however, include many newer areas in the field of wheelchair prescription and seating ergonomics. A chapter on electrically powered chairs does not include coverage of microcomputer controls. Accessories such as lateral supports, lumbar supports, or abductor wedges are not addressed. Although a few manufacturers are mentioned for certain chairs or seating systems, there is no inclusive listing. Only two pages are devoted to prescription of wheelchairs for children. Of the 18 references listed, only one is dated 1990; the rest are dated 1984 or before.

As a team of therapists, rehabilitation engineers, suppliers, and families need to collaborate when a wheelchair is required, Wheelchairs. A Prescription Guide, ed 2 can be a helpful basic text for the involved consumer. Its simplicity and dear illustrations can be understood by families coping with disability.
