What time is it? Time zones in the United States.

Suppose you wanted to take a train trip across the Midwest in the mid-1800s. It wouldn't have been easy to follow the schedule, because each city and town had its own official time, based on when the sun was directly overhead. When it was noon in Cleveland, Ohio, for instance, it might be 11:57 in Columbus, and 11:53 in Cincinnati.

That made rail travel a nightmare. So, in 1872, the railroad companies came up with a plan. They adopted a system of nearly 50 time zones for the entire U.S. But that was still too complicated.

In 1883, railroad managers met in St. Louis, Missouri, and voted to correct the problem. They reduced the number of standard U.S. time zones from 50 to 4: Eastern Standard Time (EST EST electroshock therapy.

Since then, two more time zones have been added: Alaska Standard Time Alaska Standard Time
