What is the Subcontractors Trade Association?

The Subcontractors Trade Association was established in July, 1966 by a group of subcontractors and suppliers with a vision that saw the need for representation.

We have a membership of approximately 350 subcontractors and suppliers in the greater New York New York, state, United States
New York, Middle Atlantic state of the United States. It is bordered by Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and the Atlantic Ocean (E), New Jersey and Pennsylvania (S), Lakes Erie and Ontario and the Canadian province of
area covering just about every discipline in the construction industry.

Our goal is to improve the economic well being of our members through representation, support and assistance through the process of legislation, legal action, public relations public relations, activities and policies used to create public interest in a person, idea, product, institution, or business establishment. By its nature, public relations is devoted to serving particular interests by presenting them to the public in the most , education and other public information programs.

STA focuses its activities on problems affecting subcontractors in public and private construction, including progress payments, bid-shopping, improper back changes, legislation, prevailing wage A prevailing wage is the median wage paid to workers in a specified locality. Scope

Current problems and issues of special concern to our members are addressed through one-on-one meetings arranged directly with agencies or parties involved and at our regularly scheduled General Membership Dinner Meetings.  to perform ever-increasing portions of the construction contract, the need for legislation to help protect their interests grew at an alarming rate.

In 1975, the STA, with the support of our four sister subcontractor association in the state, embarked on a legislative program that has successfully produced 33 pieces of legislation to protect and improve the well being of its members.

The first piece of legislation made it illegal for any contract to contain a wavier of lien on either public or private jobs. Subsequent legislation further enhanced the lien process. Other legislative victories addressed such issues as Prompt Pay and Timely Requisitions for Contingent Payment. We submitted briefs in support of the Court of Appeals' decision on the abolishment of the "pay if paid" clause and supported the legislation for the Workers' Compensation workers' compensation, payment by employers for some part of the cost of injuries, or in some cases of occupational diseases, received by employees in the course of their work.  Reform.

We continue to propose legislation that would require owners to put retainage into interest bearing escrow escrow
