What Next for U.S. Foreign Policy?


The impressive accuracy of the interview with me by Jesse Jesse (jĕs`ē), in the Bible, the descendant of Rahab, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and the father of David. Referring to the restoration of the Davidic monarchy, the Book of Isaiah speaks of a shoot coming from the "stump of Jesse.  Walker ("What Next for U.S. Foreign Policy?" June) was unfortunately counterbalanced coun·ter·bal·ance

1. A force or influence equally counteracting another.

2. A weight that acts to balance another; a counterpoise or counterweight.

tr.v.
 by the rifle placed above it: "The Pacifist."

That term is not accurate, and it may confuse con·fuse  
v. con·fused, con·fus·ing, con·fus·es

v.tr.

a. To cause to be unable to think with clarity or act with intelligence or understanding; throw off.

b.
 readers. My views do not fall into any of the types of "pacifism pacifism, advocacy of opposition to war through individual or collective action against militarism. Although complete, enduring peace is the goal of all pacifism, the methods of achieving it differ. ." Historically, most nonviolent struggles have been waged by people who were never pacifists. Many groups have chosen nonviolent struggle not on ethical grounds, but because they felt it would be most effective.

That means that future acute conflicts, including against extreme dictatorships, can be waged by people who are not pacifists, through skilled application of strategic nonviolent struggle. That fact opens new possibilities.

Also, my earlier book was mistitled. It is The Politics of Nonviolent Action, not The Politics of Nonviolence. My new book is titled Waging Nonviolent Struggle.
