What, No Meat?!By Debra Halperin Poneman and Emily Anderson Emily Anderson, OBE (March 1891 - October 1962) was a British Foreign Office official and scholar of German. She was born in Galway, Ireland, the daughter of Alexander Anderson, president of Queens College Galway. Ms. Greene What, No Meat?! What to Do When Your Kid Becomes a Vegetarian was written for non-vegetarian parents whose children announce that they are becoming vegetarian. Overall, the tone of the book is supportive of vegetarianism vegetarianism, theory and practice of eating only fruits and vegetables, thus excluding animal flesh, fish, or fowl and often butter, eggs, and milk. In a strict vegetarian, or vegan, diet (i.e. , even encouraging parents to try it themselves. Common myths about vegetarianism, including "vegetarians don't get enough protein" and "you have to drink milk to get calcium," are debunked. Also, ideas for dealing with social situations like holiday meals, eating out, and eating at a friend's house are presented. The book includes a number of recipes, many of which are vegan vegan /veg·an/ (ve´gan) (vej´an) a vegetarian whose diet excludes all food of animal origin. ve·gan n. . Recipes tend to have a lot of ingredients and appear to be geared for the parent or teen who enjoys cooking rather than for a teen who just wants to make a quick meal. A section in the book suggesting replacements for meat includes ideas using chicken, turkey, and fish, which seemed out of place in a book written for vegetarians. I would also have liked to see some mention of vitamin [B.sub.12] for vegans. Overall, however, What, No Meat?! would be a useful book for parents who want to help their child be a vegetarian.
