What's new with San Francisco's small, historic hotels?

A high level of personal service and careful attention to detail give small hotels a special appeal. Visitors to San Francisco now have more of them to choose from, Within the last decade, owners have resuscitated several old hotels that had lost their luster. Our last report (in the April 1986 Sunset) listed 14. Work has continued on two of those, and two others have joined the ranks.

This update uses the same criteria. Each building is at least 50 years old, has 35 to 100 rooms, and has someone on duty at the front desk at all times. Each has also been restored or remodeled to maintain its character. We visited at least twice.

Prices quoted are for double occupancy. The Monticello and Majestic offer valet parking. At all, nearby garages cost about $14 per day (ask about evening rates),

Two "new" historic hotels

Aston Regis Hotel, 490 Geary St., 94102; (415) 928-7900 or (800) 854-0011 in California, 345-4443 from other states. This charming hotel mirrors the elegant salons of 18th-century Europe. Antique canopy beds, armoires, and writing desks furnish the 86 rooms, which range in price from $92 for a small double to $225 for a penthouse suite with fireplace. A London cab, complete with British chauffeur, provides limousine service. The hotel's restaurant, Regina's, offers French-Creole cuisine.

Monticello Inn, 80 Cyril Magnin St., 94102; (415) 392-8800 or (800) 669-7777. This hotel has a fireplace-warmed library. Its 91 rooms ($99 a night, $129 to $149 for suites) are decorated with a country colonial theme and provide a bright, cheerful atmosphere. The Corona Bar & Grill's menu includes innovative Californian-Mexican dishes such as tamarind duck and shark tacos. Continental breakfast is included in the room price. Owners of this elegant hotel have acquired the adjacent apartment building, where they'll add 35 more suites to their current 48 rooms ($99 to $130). Also planned are meeting rooms and a larger kitchen for their French restaurant, the Act IV Lounge; renovation of this new wing is expected to begin soon. Price includes Continental buffet breakfast.

The Majestic, 1500 Sutter St., 94109; (415) 441-1100 or (800) 252-1155 inside California, 824-0094 outside. All five floors of this delightful 1902 building are now completely renovated, including marble fireplaces and claw-foot bathtubs. Prices for the 60 rooms run from $95 to $160. The Cafe Majestic features California cuisine, the hotel bar a butterfly collection.
