Negotiating a new lease agreement has played a key role in the delayed expansion, on which the Australian company plans to spend more than $200 million. Westfield officials have said that they want guaranteed operation of the 86-acre mall after expansion beyond 2038, which is when the current lease on the site expires. City Manager Clay Phillips said previous lease negotiations fell apart when Westfield executives objected to terms determined between the city and some lower level Westfield employees. City officials have said that they will extend the lease until 2063, but they would require a significant raise in rent from Westfield, which is currently paying the city about $1.9 million per year. |
