West offers law firm competitive intelligence; launches Westlaw Japan & Counsel Monitor services.
The new service enables law firm executives to benchmark their business performance against a designated group of peer law firms across a range of pricing, profit and expense categories. It is designed to reveal current trends at the firm, practice group, office location or timekeeper levels in categories such as a firm's competitiveness, profitability and productivity.
Also, Thomson West and Shin Nippon Hoki Shuppan (SNHS; Tokyo), a publisher of legal, tax and accounting information for the Japanese market, have signed a joint venture agreement establishing Westlaw Japan K.K. (Tokyo), a business that will develop a new online service for the world's second largest legal information market.
Thomson said the venture is the first of its kind in Japan. SNHS will provide Japanese law content, editorial staff, knowledge of the Japanese market and a sales channel. Thomson will provide the technology platform, online infrastructure, online information solutions, and the Westlaw brand. SNHS said the venture will focus on opportunities driven by the anticipated increase in the adoption of online legal information services by Japanese legal professionals.
Finally, West has also launched Counsel Monitor, an intelligence service designed to help corporate legal departments explain the business implications of legal trends by company, industry and law firm. The service aggregates case law and dockets from Westlaw, and assists the user in identifying litigation trends, monitor competitive representation and benchmark within an industry. It also provides an overview of the latest news, current legal activity and deals. It shows which law firms and attorneys represent specific companies, and distribution of cases among state and federal courts.
