West Pharmaceutical Services Introduces LyoTec; High Performance Stoppers Meet Demands of New Automated Lyophilization Chamber Technology.
Parenteral Drug Association Annual Meeting
ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 8, 2004
West Pharmaceutical Services, Inc. (NYSE: WST) today introduced LyoTec(TM) stoppers at the Parenteral Drug Association (PDA) Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida. The product launch comes in response to market demands for stoppers that do not stick to the pressure plates in lyophilization chambers.
LyoTec stoppers are treated on the top surface with West FluroTec(R), a patented fluorocarbon film. The film prevents stoppers from sticking to the top pressure plates at the end of the lyophilization cycle. Lyophilization is a process in which water is removed from a drug formulation by freezing the drug product in a vial and exposing it to a high vacuum under controlled temperature and pressure. This enables longer preservation of the drug without harming the potency.
"We discovered that by applying our patented FluroTec(R) film to the top surface of our existing stoppers, we can help our customers reduce the costly product losses that result from lyophilization chamber disasters," said Donald E. Morel, Jr., Ph.D., Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of West Pharmaceutical Services. "By applying the film to just the top surface, many of our customers can readily switch to the LyoTec stopper without extensive re-qualification because the drug contact surface area remains the same. The LyoTec product line promotes rapid conversion of existing products to meet critical customer needs."
In addition to existing West stopper formulations and configurations, the company is introducing a single-vent design to further enhance processability. The new single-vent "igloo" design dramatically reduces the occurrence of stopper clumping and twinning in filling lines.
