activities in this program have been designed to help middle-school students enhance their skills in both English and Spanish. The activities are designed to be versatile, so that each student can work at his or her own pace. You may wish to photocopy and distribute portions of the activities so that students may complete one section at a time. Ideally, we recommend having students do two activities a week over the course of a month, accompanied by vocabulary practice. Using the word list with 100 English words and 100 Spanish words provided, students can focus on 25 words each week. To help them learn the words, students can play word games, write definitions, sentences, stories, and create their own word puzzles.

, write the following four sentences:

* Write your name on the top line.

* Take out a piece of paper and a pencil.

* Hand in your list when you are done.

* Write down three things that describe you.

Ask your students to put these four sentences in sequential order by indicating which would naturally come first, second, third and last. Explain that like directions we need to follow, it is important for the writing that we read, to be in the correct order as well.

Copy and distribute the Historically Speaking repreducible, on page 12. Explain to your students that the recipe steps and the paragraphs of the story are not in the right order. Ask them to read all the parts of each exercise separately and then place them in sequential order so that they make sense. Students should write the correct numbers on the lines next to the corresponding paragraphs or phrases.

Activity 2 Putting It All Together

Students will put their knowledge of English, Spanish and Hispanic culture to the test as they analyze crossword puzzle crossword puzzle, word game in which words corresponding to numbered clues are put into a grid of horizontal and vertical squares to form intersecting words. The puzzle is solved when a player supplies all of the words correctly.  clues. Give each student a copy of the Putting It All Together reproducible, on page 14. While the "Across" clues are in English, and the "Down" clues are in Spanish, the answers are the names of people and places with common spellings or Spanish words frequently used in English. Students might need to use encyclopedias to help them with some answers. This might also be a good activity for kids to take home and do with their families.

Activity 3 Analyzing Words--What Would You Say?

Analogies explore word--and concept--relationships. Implicit in Adj. 1. implicit in - in the nature of something though not readily apparent; "shortcomings inherent in our approach"; "an underlying meaning"
underlying, inherent
making or solving analogies are numerous critical thinking skills. Introduce analogy sentences with simple examples so students can see and understand the relationships between the words. Encourage students to think aloud or to work in pairs to solve them.

Explain to students: Analogy sentences contain two sets of words. The first pair of words is related. Once you figure out this relationship, then solving them is easy because the second pair of words goes together the same way. Then share some of the many types of word relationships with your students, using these examples:

* The pair of words might be synonyms (words with similar meanings) or antonyms (words with opposite meanings). For example, close is to near as distant is to far. And top is to bottom as under is to over.

* One word in the pair might be a subset or part of the other. For example, day is to week as month is to year.

* One word in the pair might be a more intensive term for the other word. For example, tired is to exhausted as loud is to deafening deaf·en·ing
adj.

Idiom:
deafening silence
A silence or lack of response that reveals something significant, such as disapproval or a lack of enthusiasm.
.

* Or, the words might describe scale or size differences. For example, pebble is to boulder as hill is to mountain.

* One word in the pair might be an example of the other. For example, Thanksgiving is to holiday as mosquito mosquito (məskē`tō), small, long-legged insect of the order Diptera, the true flies. The females of most species have piercing and sucking mouth parts and apparently they must feed at least once upon mammalian blood before their eggs can  is to insect.

* Or, one word in the pair might be a function of the other. For example, eye is to sight as nose is to smell.

Then copy and distribute the Analyzing Words reproducible, on page 15, to your students. Review the directions with your students. The content of the English and Spanish analogies are different. In the English analogy sentences, the first word in each is a word that was adopted into the English language English language, member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Germanic languages).  scrambled words. Copy and distribute the Scrambling to Match the Definitions reproducible, on page 16, and review the directions with your students. Each scrambled word and clue presents a fact about a Spanish-speaking country.

Activity 5 Odd Word Out

With this activity, students demonstrate their vocabulary knowledge and their understanding of synonyms and antonyms. Explain to your students that synonyms are words that are alike or similar in meaning, while antonyms are words that are opposite in meaning. Together, generate examples and record them on the board. Then distribute the Odd Word Out repreducible, on page 17, to your students and review the directions. Be sure to encourage students to use dictionaries if they are unsure of a word's meaning!

Activity 6 Spelling Sleuths

This activity gives students the opportunity to review some frequently misspelled words. Copy and distribute the Spelling Sleuths repreducible, on page 18, and review the directions with your students. Students must choose among four possible spellings to ascertain the correct one. Encourage students to work together and think aloud on the more challenging questions. Afterward af·ter·ward   also af·ter·wards

Activity 7 Straight from the Headlines

In this activity, students must read closely and put their spelling knowledge to the test!

Copy and distribute the Straight From the Headlines reproducible, on page 19, and review the directions with your students. Each headline contains a fact about Hispanic culture and includes at least one misspelled word. Hint: No names of persons are misspelled.

Hold a Spelling Bee

Give each of your students a copy of the Spelling Bee list reproducible, on page 7, and hold your own class spelling bee! Register online at www.wendysdeletreeconmigo.com to receive program winner ribbons and Wendy's[R] Frosty coupons for your students!

Celebrating Hispanic Contributions

Create a quilt celebrating great Hispanic men and women throughout history. Ask each student to choose a historical person and learn about his or her achievements. Then have each student design a square with pictures, drawings, and facts about the person he or she chose to celebrate. When everyone is finished, assemble the squares into a paper quilt, using long strips of paper for the border. Mount it in a hallway for the whole school to see and appreciate!

The Timing of Things

Create a classroom timeline with your students to depict the rich and varied Hispanic contributions to American history. Hang long strips of paper along a bulletin board or classroom wall. As the class learns new facts about the importance of Hispanic culture in America, have students take turns recording their new knowledge on the timeline.

And the Award Goes To ...

Create your own award show! Brainstorm with students to come up with the name of an award that celebrates the achievements of Hispanic Americans. Then ask students to nominate Hispanic Americans--celebrities, athletes, officials--for the class award. Make it extra fun by holding a make-believe awards show and allowing students to dress up and give speeches. Record the event with a bulletin board that celebrates the children's award choices.

Making Murals

Murals are popular artistic forms in many Hispanic communities. Share the mural mural

Painting applied to and made integral with the surface of a wall or ceiling. Its roots can be found in the universal desire that led prehistoric peoples to create cave paintings—the desire to decorate their surroundings and express their ideas and beliefs.
on the Instructor Masterpiece poster Reach High and You Will Go Far and the simple art lesson with your students. Then, have your students work together to create a class mural, or posters. The design could represent the class, or it could represent contributions, events, and customs related to Hispanic heritage.

In the Headlines

As a follow-up to the Straight from the Headlines reproducible, on page 19, have students bring in articles from English and Spanish newspapers or magazines. Use these articles to open discussions on current events, and to reinforce vocabulary. Ask each student to find an unfamiliar word in the article he or she is reading and list the word on the board. Figure out the words together and look up the definitions. Later, use the articles to create a current events bulletin board. Also, post your new vocabulary words on the board. This sends the message that the newspaper is a place to learn facts and new words!

Oh, No! The recipe and the article below ate all out of order! Can you fix them? Read all of the recipe steps and figure out their correct order. On the lines, number the steps so that the recipe reads correctly. Then do the same with the article. Remember to reread Verb 1. reread - read anew; read again; "He re-read her letters to him"

Tortilla Time

Tortillas are a traditional food in Hispanic culture. Original tortillas were thin, flat, round cakes made from corn. Dried corn was soaked in water, then ground with a stone to make a paste. The paste was then molded by hand into little round cakes and cooked over a fire or on a griddle. Making corn tortillas was an arduous task and required strength.

Flour tortillas are more common today. Arrange the steps below in the correct order to discover how to make them.

-- Form the mixture into small balls (about the size of an orange).

-- Flip tortillas so that both sides are cooked.

-- Sift together 4 cups of flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of salt in a large bowl.

-- Roll out the balls of dough into flat, round shapes that are about an eighth of an inch thick (about as thick as a cracker (1) A person who breaks into a computer system without authorization, whose purpose is to do damage (destroy files, steal credit card numbers, plant viruses, etc.). Because a cracker uses low-level hacker skills to do cracking, the terms "cracker" and "hacker" have become ).
