Since moving to Jerry Falwell's home turf in Lynchburg, Va., in September, openly gay reverend Mel White and his partner, Gary Nixon Gary Nixon (Born on January 25, 1941, in Anadarko, Oklahoma) is an American motorcycle racer who most notably won the AMA Grand National Championship in 1967 and 1968. Nixon and White don't mind the attention--in fact, it's why they moved there. The couple decided to rent a home across the street from Jerry Falwell's Thomas Road Baptist Church Thomas Road Baptist Church is a megachurch in Lynchburg, Virginia. It was founded in 1956 by Jerry Falwell, who served as its senior pastor until his death in 2007. Thomas Road claims over 24,000 members.  in hopes of demonstrating to Falwell and his flock that gay people can lead Christian lives. "My goal is to help lower the fear factor," White said. "People around here believe the propaganda that gays are a threat to society. We plan to show them the opposite."
