Welcome to our hometown Bay Ridge Brooklyn, New York.

Can you think of a place that long ago was very valuable to developers, a place where extravagant homes were built, historic landmarks preserved, and diverse cultures lived next to each other? The answer is a wonderful and historic area called Bay Ridge: the best place in the United States to live.

Bay Ridge was originally known as Yellow Hook, for the yellowish soil the original Dutch settlers found there. But when yellow fever yellow fever, acute infectious disease endemic in tropical Africa and many areas of South America. Epidemics have extended into subtropical and temperate regions during warm seasons.  struck the area in 1853, residents realized the community's name was an ill fit, given the circumstances.

The name was changed to Bay Ridge, due to its proximity to New York Bay New York Bay, arm of the Atlantic Ocean at the mouth of the Hudson River, SE N.Y. and NE N.J., enclosed by the shores of NE New Jersey, E Staten Island, S Manhattan, and W Long Island (Brooklyn) and opening on the SE to the Atlantic Ocean between Sandy Hook, N.J. , with beautiful views of the water. The views attracted wealthy people, who built extravagant summer homes there. Many of those homes are still standing.

But once the New York City subway The New York City Subway is a rapid transit system owned by the City of New York and leased to the New York City Transit Authority , an affiliate of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and also known as MTA New York City Transit.  was extended to Bay Ridge in 1915, the area was transformed. Many Thriving Cultures

Today, Bay Ridge has a rich ethnic heritage. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, many Norwegian and Danish people settled in Bay Ridge. The area still publishes a weekly Norwegian newspaper, and many churches still hold services in Norwegian. Each year, people dress in Nordic folk costumes and march in the Constitution Day Parade to Leif Ericson Park, where Miss Norway is crowned.

Bay Ridge has since expanded to include Irish, Italian, Greek, Asian, and Middle Eastern residents. The area also is home to one of the oldest Arab-American communities in New York. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1990, Bay Ridge has become a popular location for immigrants from that former country.

Thanks to all these ethnic groups, we have a mouth-watering mouth·wa·ter·ing or mouth-wa·ter·ing

A Famous Bridge

The history of Bay Ridge illustrates how innovations in transportation can reshape communities. First came the subway in 1915. Then, almost 50 years later, the imposing Verrazano-Narrows Bridge was opened, connecting Brooklyn and Staten Island (see photo and map). The bridge was named for Giovanni de Verrazano, who explored the entrance to New York Harbor New York Harbor, a geographic term, refers collectively to the rivers, bays, and tidal estuaries near the mouth of the Hudson River in the vicinity of New York City. This is sometimes construed in the sense "the Ports of New York and New Jersey".  in 1524. When the bridge was completed in 1964, it was the world's longest suspension bridge.

People are still attracted to Bay Ridge because of the water. Its parks are favorite spots for runners, bikers, and strollers who want to get a breathtaking view of New York Harbor. Being a kid in Bay Ridge is great! It is safe, friendly, and fun. Diverse people from different places get along really well. We can enjoy different types of cultures and food from Chinese to English to Arabic. Bay Ridge is one of a kind!
