Reshef Tenne, of the Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot,
Israel, has been awarded the MRS Metal for 2005 from the Materials
Research Society (MRS). The MRS Medal award "recognizes a specific
outstanding recent discovery or advancement that is expected to have a
major impact on the progress of any materials-related field." Dr.
Tenne was given the award for realizing that nanoclusters of layered
compound materials (e.g., Mo[S.sub.2], W[S.sub.2]) can be made to fold
into hollow cage structures, known as inorganic fullerenes, in analogy
to graphitic carbon.
